Emergency & Distributions - about the project
The type of assistance we try to provide depends on the country and the situation there. We do not hide the fact that the priority aid project is "Give a Job!", for the simple reason that work provides funds to cover other needs, but also helps to the people in need to "straighten their back", helps to move further, and not just be dependent on all kinds of distributions that sooner or later would be cutted.
However, in times of crisis, emergency help in the form of food packages, medicine supply or other is very needed and often helps people to save their lives.
As part of emergency assistance, we our support can be divided into two groups:
-
"ad hoc" conditioned by sudden need,
-
more complex ones, which support other long-term activities and are largely (though not exclusively) dedicated to families that we have previously helped, e.g. by restoring destroyed apartments. We have even distinguished these types of support as separate projects, e.g. "Light For" or "Warmth For".
Let's take a look at our current emergency assistance in particular countries, noting that most of the following activities are carried out together with Caritas of the Archdiocese of Łódź:
Ukraine
The most complex emergency aid support is provided in Ukraine, where since the beginning of the war we have delivered tons of food and other supplies and articles needed by people to survive. Emergency aid is still the main type of support we are providing in this country.
Only in 2022, we made nearly 80 tours to Ukraine, transporting over 500 refugees and providing nearly 5,000 liters of fuel and 100 tons of humanitarian aid.
In 2023/2024, we continued to transport humanitarian aid, including approximately 1,200 kg of food and 200 additional food packages, 150 kg of sanitation and hygine, and 220 packages of painkillers.
As part of "Warmth For", we donated 15 heaters (gas and oil heaters), 15 stoves, 10 generators, 80 sets of thermal underwear, nearly 800 pairs of winter socks, clothes, and purchased wood for 11 families from the village of Partyzanckie.
Lebanon
Projects related to the distribution of food or other products, e.g. baby milk or electric heaters, were conditioned not only by the effects of the explosion but, above all, by the systematically deteriorating economic situation. At some point, certain items were too expensive or simply disappeared from the market. Lebanon was also covered by the darkness due to lack of electricity or too high generator prices. Hence "Milk for" (distribution of over 3,000 boxes of baby formula), "Warmth for" (helping over 30 families survive the winter and distribution of 100 electric heaters) and "Light For" (installation of over 160 lamps with a solar battery) in Lebanon developed the most, supporting other ad hoc activities, such as the distribution of food packages (190 in total), the purchase of medicines, payment for medical treatments and support for a field kitchen (after the explosion).
A separate important project in the field of emergency aid was the organization of support for the families of 10 firefighters who died in the port during the explosion.
Syria
In Syria, our main projects are related to supporting education, reconstruction of destroyed apartments and reactivation of jobs, but we also support people in other ways. For example in 2022 the above-mentioned "Warmth For" project allowed for the purchase of diesel for over 70 families and support in covering generator costs for nearly 400.
We also provide help through the atelier of the Franciscan sisters, organizing, among others: food packages for families, which are under their care.
After the tragic earthquake, we also managed to reduce the costs of purchasing medicines by 80% for 450 people for 3 months (project implemented together with Redemptoris Missio).
Tunisia
In Tunisia, we run a „House for a Migrants”, which is not only a place that provides shelter, but also a center for emergency support. Our volunteers have often distributed necessary items and supported people in dire need. For example we organised 3 distribution to the residents of the Raoued district (food, hygiene products, baby milk, heating devices and blankets).
